We are sure that you will agree that some sort of certification is a must for being a part of a profession. Get certified and become a part of this global trend in the field of PM.

Q: There is a PMP certification also given by PMI of USA. What is the difference between the two?

A:
The project management discipline is growing almost exponentially in the last few years. PM Certification was first introduced by PMI of USA in 1986.

There are 2 major certifications currently available to the world community of PM professionals. One is from PMI of USA and the second one is from IPMA. PMI awards a single level PMP certification whereas IPMA has 4 different levels of certification i.e. Level A, B, C and D. In PMA's opinion, IPMA Level D Certification is more or less equivalent to PMP examination of USA. The PMP examination, administered by PMI has 1 Paper of 200 questions with 4 multiple choices. IPMA Level D Certification has 2 papers - Paper 1containing 100 questions with 4 multiple choices (objective type) and the second paper is a more detailed set of questions requiring a candidate to display the depth of his/her knowledge and it is essay type plus some objective assessment.

In PMA's view, you need to become more knowledgeable by acquiring certification like IPMA Level D Certification. It will pay rich dividends.

Some of the advantages of becoming a IPMA Level D Certified professional

Q: Will it be worth spending the certification fee from my own pocket (Rs. 10,000 for members & Rs. 15,000 for non-members )?

A: In PMA's view, this is the best investment you can make. The present century is knowledge dominated. We have to move forward by acquiring additional knowledge and qualifications. Knowledge, remember, is our permanent asset. In time to come, your return on investment of Rs. 10,000 for PMA members and Rs. 15,000 for non-members will increase 100 fold at least. Do not expect return tomorrow and a promotion day after. Your value globally will also go up considerably providing you with better options in your career.

Q: Should I not become a Life member of PMA and thus opt for the reduced certification fee of Rs. 10,000?

A: A wise person aspiring to build his/her career in the new emerging project management discipline will certainly opt to become a member of PMA - India's National PM association. PMA is a vibrant not-for-profit registered society and one of the 42 member associations of IPMA, Switzerland. From the financial viewpoint, it is more prudent to become a Life member of PMA and save Rs. 5,000 in certification fees. The one time fee for becoming a Life member of PMA is only Rs. 10,000 inclusive of Rs. 3,000 as the admission fee.

Step 5: PMA will let you know your result in about 6 weeks time.

Step 6: If you pass, enjoy the privilege of becoming a IPMA Level D Certified professional. And if by any chance, you are unsuccessful, you can enroll again for the examination and appear next time.

Q: What is the main advantage of IPMA Level D Certification over PMP?

A: It is hard to answer. You can choose from either one of them. One of the advantages of IPMA Level D Certification as we see in PMA is that this certification supports each National PM association like PMA, India which are chartered to spread the PM movement in their countries. Besides this, the fee for the IPMA Level D Certification examination is only Rs. 10,000 for life members. For PMP examination the fee is US$ 555 for non-members of PMI and US$ 405 for PMI members. The PMI membership fee is about US$ 120 per year.

In the ultimate analysis, we should be an integral part of our own national association representing the aspirations of the national community of managers on various global platforms. Globalization brings wider vision with focus to local implementation.

Q: How is IPMA-D linked with IPMA Level D?

A:
IPMA Competency Baseline - ICB is the basis for certification across all the IPMA national association members. It is mandatory for national associations like PMA, India to evolve their own National Competency Baseline (NCB) based on ICB.
